📖 Content moderation glossary
What is post-moderation?
In short
Post-moderation is a moderation method in which user content is published immediately and reviewed afterwards; content that breaks the rules is hidden or removed once it has been detected.
Post-moderation keeps conversations fluid: users see their comment straight away, and moderators review the flow after the fact. It is the default on most social networks and on many news sites.
The main risk is the window between publication and review. On a brand's Instagram post, an insulting or scam comment that stays visible for three hours can be screenshotted, liked and answered. The shorter that window, the safer post-moderation is.
This is why post-moderation is usually combined with automation: software reviews each comment within seconds of its publication and hides the clear violations, while people handle the borderline cases. OpenModeration works this way, with doubtful cases handled by its own team, on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WordPress and websites connected through its API.
