📖 Content moderation glossary
What is hybrid moderation?
In short
Hybrid moderation is a moderation model in which software handles clear-cut content automatically and people review the ambiguous or sensitive cases, so each decision is taken by whoever is best placed to take it.
Pure human moderation does not scale, and pure automation makes mistakes on irony, quotes, slang and context. Hybrid moderation splits the work: the machine handles volume and speed, people handle nuance and responsibility.
Example: under a brand's post announcing a price increase, the AI hides obvious insults and spam at once, leaves angry but legitimate complaints visible, and sends a comment that might be a veiled threat to a moderator, who decides in a few seconds with the full context.
For media, brands and public bodies, hybrid moderation is the way to be both fast and fair. It also fits the Digital Services Act, which expects contested decisions on online platforms to be reviewed under the supervision of qualified staff and not solely by automated means (Article 20).
OpenModeration is built on this model: clear violations are hidden automatically, criticism stays visible, and doubtful cases are handled by the OpenModeration team. You see every decision in real time in one console and can override it whenever you want.
